Course Description

In the next six weeks through the Managing Public Sector Work course the focus will turn to the organization level by concentrating on three topics:

  • diversity in the workplace
  • establishing effective and efficient teams
  • managing projects in the public sector

In the first week of this course, we'll explore the concept of diversity by viewing primary, secondary, organization, and era (events-based) dimensions of the diversity wheel. You are asked to share with your colleagues any workplace diversity documents that are published by your organization such as a: diversity vision/mission statement; diversity strategic plan; diversity policy statement; diversity communications plan; diversity training plan; diversity brochures; newsletters; or others. These documents will be posted to a discussion board for your class colleagues to view and perhaps use as a model within their organization. We’ll also provide a glossary of key terms, a diversity self-assessment, as well as interesting reading regarding best practices in achieving diversity in the workforce. As good teamwork; through diverse team members; is essential for high individual and organizational performance, we will work through how to build and utilize effective and efficient teams. Now that we have a more complete understanding of how a team functions, we will be able to put that knowledge to good use by effectively and efficiently leading a project management team. Project management is a complex process that requires a wide range of skills that is the focus of the final weeks of the course.
